Marilyn Denis

Marilyn Denis moved into her studio at Dorothy Day Apartments April 7th, 2003 and just one week later became the coordinator of the building’s front desk service. Marilyn’s form of leadership exudes a quiet, calm, truthful and steady beat. Nothing passes Marilyn’s watch unnoticed, yet an unwavering principle of fairness and confidentiality protects everyone, except those who threaten others: drug dealers and domestic violence batterers beware! Marilyn expects and earns the respect of those plagued by mental and suicidal demons, every mother juggling childrens’ mishaps and adolescent rebellion, and anyone struggling with recovery. When asked to describe her role, she quickly replied, “It’s personal.” It is personal indeed for this dedicated, charismatic lady who has become the center, the heart, and the balm of Dorothy Day Apartments, where 192 children and adults reside, and dozens of civic and cultural neighborhood events are hosted monthly. One of 7 siblings, she was prepared for the many personalities she encounters daily. Dorothy Day Apartments has become Marilyn’s extended family and allowed her to witness first hand life’s unending cycle – the delight of welcoming newborns and the grief at bidding farewell when death calls. “They are ALL my family,” she says with pride, “and I will always be grateful for having the opportunity to know them, serve them and love them unconditionally.”
